It's a bird. It's a plane. It's...

Well, actually, it IS a bird... a turkey vulture chick to be exact. On a trip out to the Center for the Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC this past Saturday, I found out that September is Vulture Awareness Month, and these intriguing avians are being spotlighted for their unique contributions to our world. For example, did you know that a vulture’s digestive system is so acidic it can digest and kill bacteria as dangerous as anthrax? Vultures may seem like dirty, creepy birds, but they actually keep the environment much healthier by cleaning up rotting road-side fare that might otherwise spread disease, and, let’s be honest, put a damper on nature’s aesthetics. Another fun fact: vultures nest on the ground. So if you happen to find one of the adorable fuzz-balls pictured above, please leave it where you found it—it hasn’t fallen out of a tree! Many a baby vulture has been brought to the Center because a well-intentioned person stole it right out of its own bed.

Two Worlds Collide

It has been exciting and, at times, challenging, to have two businesses. There are wonderful attributes to both endeavors, and, every once in a while, I get to experience the benefits of both at the same time. Back in May, my photography business and travel business overlapped when a family from Charlotte traveled down to see a festival I was promoting on travelingink.com. Their young son, Will, was partial to the Old Crow Medicine Show, who headlined the First Flush Festeaval at the Charleston Tea Plantation. When the Curtis family saw the concert posted on the Traveling Ink facebook page, they decided to plan a trip down to Charleston. When they arrived, they also decided to book a photography session.

Waves and Water Levels

The rush of rapids next to my trailer lulls me to sleep after long days. The water level rises and falls, but in less of a rhythm than the ocean’s tides. I can watch the ebb and flow marked with water lines on rocks, but it is less predictable than the daily highs and lows the sea brings. The salt is missing from the water’s scent. The blue hue isn’t there. But the white capping bubbles roll over themselves the same. I can sit and watch the rushing of wave upon wave and forget if i’m near the Atlantic Ocean or the Arkansas River.

Crushin' on REI and Half-Moon

Most of us have had a crush on another person at some point in life. But have you ever found yourself enamored with a company? Maybe they have the most beautiful clothes you’ve ever seen, or incredibly innovative products, or they are supporting environmental awareness in a cool way, or their employees seem to love working there. Perhaps you want to work there. Or maybe you’d prefer a shopping spree. For whatever reason, they inspire you.

Heading Westward

I read a quippy quote once that we need to go on adventures to know where we truly belong. Well I haven't decided yet, but I think I might just belong in a trailer.

Client Testimonials

  • A Charleston resident suggested a Traveling Ink concierge might be able to help me. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was one of the best pieces of advice I could have received. My friends thought I was an organizational wizard even though I kept telling them it was Traveling Ink, not me.

  • We so enjoyed our time in Charleston. Thank you for all your insight! I am recommending your services to everyone I know who is traveling to Charleston!

  • Traveling Ink planned the three full days we would have in Charleston, how we would get from one place to another, places to eat, and what the costs would be. To add to the challenge, we had to change the day of one of the main attractions because rain had been predicted. They handled all the changes with out missing a step.

  • These Charleston pros do a phenomenal job in any setting. Audra was our point person and is a pleasure to work with. She is laid back and can work with any request.
