The Powder Magazine

AN OVERVIEW

Completed by 1713, The Powder Magazine is over 300 years old and holds the claim to South Carolina's oldest public building. Originally used as an arsenal to defend the colony from the French, Spansih, pirate, and various other attacks, the building was purchased in 1902 by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and converted into a museum. The Powder Magazine holds a variety of historial artifacts from the wars and life in Colonial days, and is the perfect stop for guests looking for a quick glimpse into Charleston's history. It is an easy stop to make while strolling through Charleston to shop or dine, and guests who visit can ask all about why they filled the roof to the brim with sand.

Residing at 79 Cumberland Street, Charleston, SC 29401, the Powder Magazine sits in the center of the downtown historic district. Parking is conveniently located directly across the street via parking garage, or guets may take advantage of one street parking.

 

Museum and Gift Shop Hours:

Monday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
