Sleeping Bags and Sleep Pads

The choice of a sleeping bag and sleep pad are of paramount importance when considering the comfort and warmth of a camping or backpacking experience. Selecting a proper product for the specifics of one's trip may make all the difference in a good night's sleep out on the trail or at one's campsite.

SLEEPING BAG SELECTION - BUYING TIPS

When selecting a sleeping bag, buyers should consider a handful of variables. Campers should consider the temperature rating, make, size, and style of a bag for optimal enjoyment. Guests should look for a bag with a temperature rating in the range of the weather environment they plan to be entering. As a general rule, buyers will be more comfortable in a bag with a lower temperature rating than the temperature in the evening. For example, if a person knows they will be camping in 45 degree weather, a bag with a 35+ rating may be a good fit. Buyers should also consider that some manufacturers rate their bags with temperatures assuming that the consumer will be inside a tent on an adequate sleeping pad. It is also of note that female buyers tend to be colder when they sleep than male consumers.

Another choice a buyer may want to make early on is whether to purchase a bag made with synthetic or down material. Down bags tend to be warmer and last longer, but may cost more up front. Down bags also loose the majority of their warmth if they become wet. Finally, shoppers should make sure they purchase a bag with enough length and width for their sleeping comfort.

SLEEPING BAG LINERS

Sleeping bag liners can be used to add additional warmth to a sleeping bag. Typically liners will provide about 10 degrees of extra warmth. Some buyers also like to take sleeping bag liners along on vacations where they may need a simple replacement for or addition to clean sheets.

SLEEPING PAD - DON'T SKIMP ON COMFORT

Campers often make the mistake of neglecting to purchase an adequate sleeping pad. The absence of a sleeping pad will result in a less comfortable night's sleep. It will also leave the camper or hiker much colder during the night if they are sleeping in a hammock, and especially if they are sleeping on the ground. A proper sleeping pad provides cushion, insulation, and a barrier between the camper and the ground so that the ground will not leach the warmth from the camper's body. Buyers should consider the size, weight, and thickness of a potential sleeping pad. Backpackers who are more conscious of weight will want a smaller, thinner pad typically. White those who are car camping may prefer a thicker pad with a bit more width or length for comfort.

Client Testimonials

  • A Charleston resident suggested a Traveling Ink concierge might be able to help me. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was one of the best pieces of advice I could have received. My friends thought I was an organizational wizard even though I kept telling them it was Traveling Ink, not me.

  • Traveling Ink planned the three full days we would have in Charleston, how we would get from one place to another, places to eat, and what the costs would be. To add to the challenge, we had to change the day of one of the main attractions because rain had been predicted. They handled all the changes with out missing a step.

  • These Charleston pros do a phenomenal job in any setting. Audra was our point person and is a pleasure to work with. She is laid back and can work with any request.
